In Spore, the game is evolution. The game starts in the primordial slime somewhere in the universe. Out of the slime evolves a character/species that mutates and develops civilization and eventually even space travel. So, the whole idea is to watch your character grow and develop and choose which mutations you want to keep in order to help along natural selection.
The game is really set up to be a blockbuster. It has been a long time in development and is simply a new style of game. First, the game is infused with all kinds of scientific parameters. So, the characters evolve along scientifically definable lines.
Second, the developers have coined the phrase, “massively single player” to describe game play. Although you are in control of your own game and do not need to form alliances or guilds (as in World of Warcraft and the like), your species may come in contact with other player’s species throughout game play.
As an observer of culture, this seems like a great way to indoctrinate the video game population with the idea of atheistic evolution. I do not have any insight into the mind of the creator of the came, but if the game is designed to dismiss God and the concept of creation, I think they missed the mark. You see, as the player develops a species, the player becomes the creator. Regardless of your personal views of creationism, intelligent design or random evolution, I find it fascinating that a video game could open the door to the discussion of a divine hand guiding the process.
